But condition varies, so checking battery health is the most important step when buying a used EV.

Many dealers and some manufacturers can provide a battery state-of-health report. Independent diagnostic services are also available in many areas.

Check the range on a full charge

Compare the estimated range at full charge with the original figure, bearing in mind that estimates change with temperature and driving style.

Factors that affect degradation

Frequent rapid charging
Regularly charging to 100 percent or running very low
Long periods in very hot climates
Battery cooling system design

Check the warranty

Most EV batteries have a separate warranty covering a minimum capacity for a set number of years or miles. Check whether it transfers to new owners.

Check charging hardware

Test both slow and fast charging and make sure the charging cable and port are in good condition.
